Expert General Strategies

Expert Strategies

This is all the good stuff that will greatly improve your gameplay. All this stuff is hard to master, but highly rewarding. I hightly reccomend that you read the basics and advanced sections before reading this.

Juggling

Juggling is when you knock an opponent into the air, follow up multiple times with various aerial attacks or projectiles. This is a highly effective strategy because they are either unable to move in the air, or they have limited access to attacks.

The first thing you need to have done is completly mastered aerial dodging. This is if your opponent tries to attack you back. It's always best if you juggle your opponent via aerial attacks. This is not true in all cases, but true for most. When you are close enough to attack, it's important to make a split second desision as to what side your opponent is going to be on (left, right, up or down).

If you find this challenging, the regular aerial attack (jump and press the attack button) usually attacks opponents in any direction.

Also, many character's recovery move make for a great juggling tool, but only if the opponent has high damage. It only works if they have high damage because after you use your recovery move, you're dead in the air. So be cautious when doing so. Some examples include Link or Samus

There are some characters like Ness or Ivysaur that can use projectiles or far extending attacks to make juggling easier. For more information, visit their individual character guides.

Sliding

Sliding is one of the hardest and most rewarding skills to master. So you may be asking yourself "Ok, I can slide big whop" It is a big whop! When sliding you can go into your up Smash Attack and still be sliding Basically, to silde, run and stop. To use your up smash, run and press up and attack at the same time. You can basically charge up the attack while still moving.

In Brawl, all characters have some slide. In my guides, you will see them classified as the following.

Low
These these are generally slower characters. They generally get about a half of a character's slide distance. An Example is Ike.

Medium
These are the medium speeded characters running wise. They usually get one to two chatacter's distance slide. An example is Fox

High
These are faster characters, and Luigi. Luigi has the highest slide in the game. These characters get three to four characters slide distance

Sliding is more of an individual characteristic than a general, but is important none the less. For specific character information, reffer to their character guide.

The Back Aerial Attack

At first, this was supposed to go into the advanced section, but I have some of my friends try it and it took them a long time.

So, to the point, all characters have a powerfull Back Aerial Attack. Now it may be powerful in two senses.

One in that it is a very strong attack that deals quite a lot of knockback or damage.
Or two, where itis very fast. It can also be both of these. Take Soinc for Example. His back aerial is slow (for him), but deals quite a bit of knockback. However on Ike, his attack is very fast and powerful.

The key to mastering this is quite trickey. When running at an opponent, it all depends on what speen of a character you have. With a slower character, it is best to do one of two things.
1: Run at your opponent and get close (depending on the character). Quickly turn around, do a short jump, and press back attack. It is really hard to do this, but is the safest way running wise.
2: Run at your opponent, jump over them, and press back attack. Usually, you'll be right on top or to the side of them if executed properly. Make sure to mix it up occasionally(see below)

With faster characters, the same options apply except for a few slight differences. In the second option, use a short jump instead of a regular one.

Common Sense and Quick Thinking

It is a little misleading that I am writing set strategies for Brawl, because it is all about quick thinking and making up quick strategies at a moments notice. Due to the random nature of Brawl, there's an endless possibilities of battles.

I can't unfortunatley tell you how to get common sense and quick thinking, but I can supply something else. If you know how the characters, stages items and everything else works, than you will be more prepared to make quick strategies. So make sure to never do the same thing twice on anybody. E.g., if you keep using Toon Link's down aerial attack all the time, everyone will eventually figure out who to demolish you. Brawl even encourages you to not use the same move a lot, it has stale moves: When you use an attack too often, it looses it's power.

Remember, know the knowledge, apply it, and mix it up.
