History of the Smash Bros. Fansite
|
Here is a short history of this site, which started up in late 2001. (Written by Site Admin)
First, my name is Brian Geiman, and I've been interested in web design before I even owned a computer. I learned HTML right after I got my first computer, and I later got into programming. Right now, I'm going to ITT Tech for Software Applications and Programming, and I run this site on the side.
The first real attempt I made at a site was posted on Geocites. It was going to be a site dedicated to Nintendo games and PC games. I started a few tutorials, posted a few downloads, and had a few other things. It was a very basic site. I don't think it's still up, but I uploaded it and you can view it here. You'll see that there is some content there about the original Smash Bros. for the N64.
The first version of this site started around the time Super Smash Bros. Melee came out. I posted the first version on Christmas 2001. The site used frames, the background was black, the text was yellow, and the side menu was a turquoise color. The layout would stay this way for quite a few years. You can see the first layout right here (The entire site isn't there, but most of it is).
The first web address of the site was:
supersmashbros.iwarp.com/
The site stayed there for about a year (maybe less), and it moved to this address:
smashbros2.tripod.com/
Here it stayed for quite a while (probably 3 or more years.) While at tripod, there was a short time that the site moved and merged with another general gaming site, and I was in charge of the SSBM portion of the site. That site never worked out, and I eventually went back to the tripod site. The URL for a while was:
n-archives.com/~thps/ssbm/main.shtml
While with the tripod, I created my first forum. The forum became pretty popular for a while, and a community formed around it. Unfortunately, there was a large period of time that I wasn't active in the site at all (sorry guys), and they created a new forum. Here was the original forum that is still up:
smashbros2.hyperboards.com/
and here is the site that most of the forum members migrated to:
www.nintendodiscussion.com/
After a long period of time that I wasn't working on the site, I started working on the site a bit again. Tripod with getting annoying with their ads, especially their pop-up and pop-under ads, so I decided it was time to move the site again. The site was moved to where it currently lives:
smashbros2.yurx.com/
Not too long after I moved it there, we got a confirmation at E3 that there was going to be a third Super Smash Bros. game (this about 5 days after I posted saying they probably weren't going to make one. -_-). I decided to finally redesign my site to something without frames. In the new layout, I used PHP for the first time.
After being up for a while, I decided to create a new forum for the new site. The original address for this forum was:
smashbros2.freeforums.org/
but after using it for a while, I decided it didn't have enough features that I wanted, so I moved it to the current address:
smashbrosfan.proboards81.com/
The forum community has now grown extremely big in a short period of time, and has inspired me to start working on the site again.
Lately, I have been slightly redesigning the site in PHP again. The code is way more organized, and I have created a CMS (Content Management System) so that staff members can help write content for the site.
Just recently, I have purchased a real domain. The site is now located at smashfan.com, smashfan.net, and smashfan.org. The new URL was released on March 9th, when Brawl came out.
