King Dedede
Overall:6
Offence:8 Defence:5 Projectile:4 Final Smash:5
Throwing:6 Recovery:8 Aerial:7 Speed:2
Reining from Dream Land, the penguin King Dedede is one of the most powerful characters in Brawl, able to level you with sometimes two hits; however he is also amongst the slowest characters. Mastering him is a challenge, but to a degree is easy to pick up for beginners due to his great recovery for his size.

Special Moves
Inhale
Similar to Kirby’s Inhale, Dedede’s inhale follows the same concept as Kirby’s for the most part; when your opponent charges press the special button and Dedede will begin to breathe in any foe near his massive mouth, particularly the opponent that was just charging at you. Unfortunately, you can’t steal your foe’s abilities like Kirby, but you can swivel around and jump with your opponents inside for a short period of time. You can spit them out by pressing the standard attack button, but they can also break free from his grasp and sustain no damage.
Waddle Dee Toss
Like any abusive king, Dedede throws around Waddle Dees, Doos, and on rare occasions Gordos with ease and not a care in the world for their safety. The Waddle Dees are the most common projectile, and simply walk around after being used until they disappear; while after being tossed Waddle Doos can send out a minor but effective electric attack from their eye sockets as they traverse the playing field. Gordo’s are the least common projectile in Dedede’s arsenal, but are the most damage efficient dishing out the most damage of the three and have a good bit of knockback.
Super Dedede Jump
Complementing his outstanding recovery skills for a heavyweight character, Dedede also has a super jump that sends him sky rocketing into the air and then landing (or falling) down even quicker. His leap can damage foes while accelerating to his peak height, and as he falls down to the ground, leaving a notable shakeup on impact to any character near. On the other hand, while in the jump it is likely to be successfully counterattacked if lazy, the best thing to do is to hit the control stick and quickly do a barrel roll in mid air to avoid the attack. This however can also set you up for an even worse counterattack if you do it just before you land, so keep that in mind. Also be careful when first using this move, it may be problematic the first few times when using the move as you may simply just jump straight up and not move to the left or right at all and end up tumbling to your doom.
Jet Hammer
Dedede’s most devastating move, the Jet Hammer is a mechanized add-on to wooden mallet that maybe one of the most robust attacks in Brawl. Utilizing his down special, Dedede charges up his hammer and can unleash the wrath upon his opponents with devastating results, usually nailing them back a sufficient amount. However what it gains in power it lacks in accuracy. You have to be quite close to execute this move without missing, and failing to do so you set yourself up for an easy counter attack. In addition if you hold down the hammer for too long, Dedede reaches his max power level for the swing but also suffers small bits of damage for everyone second after he’s in that position.
Final Smash: Konga Beat
Type 1 KO Potential: 6 Rating:5
Still flourishing his pushy abuse to his citizens, Dedede blows a whistle and begins to dance around clapping and slapping his belly, but that’s just only half it. When doing so, unparallel amounts of Waddle Dee’s zip and zoom across the stage ramming into your opposition. Waddle Doo’s and Gordo’s also make a more potent appearance compared to when they are thrown, dropping from the sky onto unsuspecting brawlers. Dedede also can not be smitten by his foes during his final smash, so don’t worry about your opponents attempting to derail you mid-final smash.
Basic Strategies
Dedede has a nice build of basic strategies to unleash and for new users of him especially. It is key to not to slip up as the king, being a slow character enemies will be able to make a speedy counter much easier. Luckily, thanks to his righteous jumping skills as he floats around like his pink series sharer, you will be able to make it back on the stage and give it another go without as much worry.
One of the least demanding strategies is to pitch out as many Waddle Dees as you can. While they will annoy your opponent, they won’t do that great of damage. What you are waiting for is a Waddle Doo or more so a Gordo to strike your opponent, allowing you to get in close and follow it up.
Exerting your Inhale is also a good starter route. Kirby players will be able to start using the King’s right off the bat, being practically identical to the pink ball of fluff. After exhaling and flinging your rival out you should follow up with a decent aerial attack or maybe an upward hammer swing from the ground.
When it comes to grab combos, it’s always great to grab your opponents and point the control stick down to have Dedede place the grabbed enemy on the ground and then flatten them with his butt. This sets them up for the same grab or a low kick or hammer swing. Be careful though, miss the grab and they could just as easily grab you.
Advanced Strategies
Building off of the Waddle Dee Toss combo, when keeping your opponent at bay he or she has two options: to use up their entire shield, counter with their projectiles, or try to avoid them all together and run in for the kill. Expect the last one more often then the first two, in doing so you should prepare with possibly a charged up Jet Hammer or a smash attack in whichever direction they come from. This will make your foes think twice before bull rushing you.
By this point you should understand the basic dos and don’ts of Dedede. It’s good to use some of his aerials to keep your rival off balance and unprepared, not to mention because he has a great recovery; he can launch a couple of attacks before having to worry about recovering all together. Nevertheless, I recommend this best when over a platform to catch you so you can fight them all the way back down to the platform.
When your opponent tries to pull themselves up and over on a ledge, stand back from the ledge and charge up jet hammer to flail on them and make them repeat the recovery process again, or KO them entirely with a good stroke of damage.
Expert Strategies
An expert Dedede player would further build off his advanced and even basic strategies, them being not too different from the building blocks. A hardy, mistake free Dedede, is a happy King indeed. Sometimes it’s best to let your opponent try to get up in your face and run a chance of messing up, in which case you follow up with a well worth hit of your own.
Your standard combo finisher move is one of Dedede’s best moves, try to use it as often as you can even if a few of the moves in-between don’t land on your foes, the final hammer gyro move is worth the effort if a klutzy enemy falls trapped into it.
The King’s side standard attack is also an adequate move for keeping kamikaze-like enemies hindered and breaking their flow. If you are ever in a dire situation, it should be your go to move in some cases to start setting up combos.
1 on 1
Large stages such as New Pork City will serve little justice for Dedede. His final smash works at its full potential on small stages such as Sky World. Keep close to your foe, but also drop back and fling his followers at foes, especially if you have collected a large percentage of damage. Use Dedede’s standard running attack to slide into foes with great momentum.
Free for All
When on the outskirts or in the middle of a frantic clash emphasize on using your smash attacks, preferably down and upward. Sliding into your opponents can be risky, but rewarding when in a large group as well. The same principle also applies when ambushing rivals with a Super Dedede Jump.
Against
Keeping away from Dedede is your best bet at winning. His Waddle Dee’s don’t have much range, and if you have a character that specializes in projectiles, you can make your opponent’s day on the battlefield a very long one. If you lack projectiles, remember that Dedede is slower than molasses and if careless can easily be stricken down.
