Donkey Kong
Overall:7
Offence:7 Defence:5 Projectile:1 Final Smash:6
Throwing:8 Recovery:7 Aerial:8 Speed:6
Donkey Kong lost some of his key strategies from Melee, but he is still a strong character. He has some signature moves that no other character can live up to, and remains a fast heavyhitter.
- Weight Class-Heavyweight
- Attack Tier-Top
- Sliding Ability-Low
Special Moves
Giant Punch
DK's Giant punch boasts great power, but has poor execution time, even when fully charged. To use a quick Giant Punch without charging, double tap the special button. If you only press it once, he'll start charging. Unfortunatley, even the double tap method isn't very fast compared to other special moves.
Head Butt
When on the ground, The Head Butt buries your opponent in the ground, similar to the Pitfall's effect, but it does not last as long. They don't stay in the ground that long, so follow up with a quick attack. In the air, it just inflicts damage.
Spinning Kong
While Spinning Kong has poor vertical recovery, it does have great horizontal recovery. It can even be used on the ground, similar to Bowser's Whirling Fortress. Make sure that you use this before he goes below a platform.
Hand Slap
While the Hand Slap isn't a true projectile, it does technically meet the requirements of a projectile. It does hit your opponent from afar, and Donkey Kong's body isn't actually hitting the opponent. But anyway, it hits opponents from both the front and the back, able to clear out a crowd of opponents if you can pull it off. If you press the special button while holding down repeatedly, he will keep slapping the ground.
Final Smash: Konga Beat
Type 1/2 KO Potential: 7/4 Rating:6
DK's Final Smash really depends on what kind of stage you are on. On smaller and medium stages, it has a fairly high KO chance. However, if you are on a large stage, it has a low KO rate. When you use this move, DK brings out his bongos and starts drumming a beat. If you press the buttons to the beat, the attacks will get a greater range. On smaller stages, it's possible to use it right away, but you may want to be close to the edge or your opponent. On medium stages, make sure that you are near your opponent, while on large stages, be right next to your opponent.
Basic Strategies
Donkey Kong is unique in the fact that he's a fast powerhouse. Most of his attacks can KO opponents at low damage, but the require slow start up time.
When an opponent comes running to you, use the Hand Slap attack them, or to make them stop running towards you. Abuse DK's Hand Slap; it's a powerful move with a high KO rate.
Always have a Giant Punch charged up and ready to go at all times. Use DK's Head Butt to bury opponents in the ground, and follow up with his standard attack(press the Attack button) to give damage. If possible, use your quick smash attack (it varies from controler type) to smash them. And if you have a charged up Giant Punch, use it to deal major damage.
Just one last tip, make sure to use his recovery move before he goes below the platform.
Advanced Strategies
When an opponent is running towards you, to a short jump and use his side aerial attack. If executed properly, they should run right into your giant fist attack.
When using Hand Slap, lure your opponents in for an aerial attack. If you released the attack soon enough, you'll be able to roll and attack with his standard combo, or even a quick smash.
Use his throws whenever possible, but only use his side throw when close to an edge. He'll pick up your opponent, but they'll be able to wriggle free. When you pick them up, throw them quickly.
For a quick but powerful attack, turn around so you're not facing your opponent, do a short jump and press towards your opponent for an aerial attack. It's a quick and powerful move.
Expert Strategies
Since DK is strong and somwehat fast, he can easily dominate over slower opponents. Throw an opponent up in the air. For heavier characters, either follow up with Hand Slap or Up smash depending on where they land. From there, juggle them using aerial attacks or Hand Slap when they hit the ground.
1 on 1
On larger stages, make sure to stick to your opponent. If they try to get close, use the Hand Slap Strategy. Also, make sure to use both his side and back side aerial attacks, but switch between each one.
Free for All
Abuse his Hand Slap when near a crowd. If you're in one, you'll never pull it off due to it's poor start up time. Try to stay away from the Head Butt combo, especially on small stages. Spinning Kong can be used to clear opponents at high damage.
Against
Since his only projectile works at close range, stay away from him, and use projectiles. If you are a slower character, watch out because he's the fastest powerhouse in the game. If you're fast, roll and dodge when you're around him and you'll easily land multiple attacks.
